October 15, 1997

Well it sure has been a long time, and for those of you who are reading this (I could probably count you on one hand) I apologize for that... but since I last wrote, life has been crazy to say the least.

Where to begin?  How about moving day?  That was a day to remember-- or more preferably one I'd love to forget.

So anyway, the day arrives- Saturday, October 4, 1997.  I had called a week earlier to set up a moving van with one of the U-Haul's outlets in Kenosha.  I spoke to a woman there who took my credit card number and all of my information and said it'd be ready at 10:00 on Saturday.  I hung up, thinking everything was set.

Saturday arrived, and I woke up a little bit late.  Naturally, I was upset and flying around the house trying to get there on time.  I arrived at the location, only to find the building deserted, the parking lot ripped up, and not a single U-Haul in sight.

I freaked out.. called U-Haul and found they had no record of my reservation at all.  I contacted the other U-Haul locations in town and they told me that the one I was at had gone out of business the day before, and that they had delivered all of their trucks to them.  However, my reservation was nowhere to be found.  I was livid.  Just my luck that I made a reservation with the one place in town that would go out of business.  So now I was all set to move, but without a van to move with.

I called Scott and let him know the bad news... he offered to help find a van for me, so he called some numbers, I called the rest.  We finally found a truck in Lake Geneva, WI; about 45 minutes away from Kenosha.  Needless to say, it was a long drive, but my mom and I hopped in the car and picked it up.

It was a 15 foot truck-- entirely too large for one bedroom worth of furniture, but it was better than nothing at all.
So my friend Dave and I loaded it up-- it took 4 hours-- and we were on our way.

Happily, nothing broke or was damaged on the way down.  Everything went surprisingly smoothly.  We got down to the apartment pretty late, got everything unloaded, dropped the truck off and were back in Kenosha to drop Dave off by 10:30pm.

So my first night in my apartment was spent on a bed with tons of boxes surrounding it.  It was nice out so I had my window open. I could hear the city noises, as well as the El train nearby.  It was noisy.  And it was bright.  My window faces east, which is directly facing the city lights, and my blinds are white.  That doesn't help much to block out the bright city lights, I tell you.

But I was there, my stuff was there, and, more or less, I was home.
